Voici un autre grand du Cyberpunk.
Si Bruce Sterlings et William Gibson sont les "fondateurs" du cyberpunk, alors Walter Jon Williams est celui qui a réussit à lui insuffler le plus grand souffle épique.
Cablé se passe dans un futur lointain, où, après une guerre aussi rapide que meurtrière, les nations orbitales ont balkanisé la terre à des buts commerciaux, créant des pénuries artificielles bien pratiques pour faire monter les prix et augmenter les bénéfices.
Mais les Panzerboys tentent de lutter contre ces pratiques douteuses en agissant tels de véritables contrebandiers, traversant les frontières aux sols à l'aide de leurs aéroglisseur blindés, les Panzers, défiant ouvertement l'ordre, établissent des blocs orbitaux.
Du moins, c'est ce qu'ils croient...Jusqu'au moment ou Cow-boy, l'un d'entre eux, ancien pilote suborbital, commence à douter, et s'il n'était finalement qu'un rouage de plus dans l'immense machinerie ?
Pendant ce temps, Sarah, l'ex-prostituée reconvertie en tueuse survivante, tente de retirer ses billes, de s'arracher à la rue, à la prostitution et à la glaise terrestre, et pour cela, combien de cadavres devra-t-elle semer ?
Ce sont les questions qui se posent-à -eux au début du Roman, qui nous guide avec un rythme sans faille a travers une guerre désespérée menée par une poignée de loosers et de criminels contre ceux qui ont écrasé la terre de toute leur puissance...
Walter Jon Williams a créé ici une véritable saga au sens noble du terme, épique, romantique, mais avec toute la noirceur et le désespoir caractérisant le Cyberpunk. Un excellent ouvrage que je conseillerais à tous ceux qui lisent cet article, tout simplement.
