MADRID, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid will not play their game from the 16th round of games in the Spanish Primera Liga as they prepare for the final of the World Club Championship in Japan, but although supporters will have to wait until the New Year for their trip to play Valencia, the last round of matches before the Christmas break in Spain promises to give a lot to talk about. Here are some things to look out for.

1: Espanyol to make Barca suffer in city derby

If Barcelona can beat their neighbors they will move to within three points of Real Madrid, but that may be easier said than done. Although nobody could accuse Espanyol of being entertaining, the club coached by Quique Sanchez Flores has conceded just one goal in almost 600 minutes football and that was an injury time consolation scored by Sporting Gijon in their 2-1 defeat in Cornella last Sunday.

Barcelona derbies tend to be feisty affairs, with last year' s meetings in both league and Cup seeing Espanyol adopt a highly physical approach to stop Barca' s star players. It worked in the league where they drew 0-0, but not in the Cup when Espanyol had two players sent off. Given that match referee Mateo Lahoz is known for letting the game flow, Barcelona' s attacking players may be preparing their ankles for some rough treatment on Sunday evening and where Mateo puts the bar could have a big influence on the result.

2: Granada aim to continue slow recovery under Lucas Alcaraz

A 1-1 draw at Malaga a week ago lifted Granada off the bottom of the Primera Liga to give the side coached by Lucas Alcaraz hope of avoiding relegation. Granada have now lost just one of their last five matches as the locally born coach, who is in his third spell at the club, has got his side organized in defense, fighting all over the pitch and with Jerome Boga offering pace in attack.

There is new faith in Granada, although that faith will be tested by Real Sociedad, who were easy winners at home to Valencia a week ago and are fifth in the table. The Basque side will be without talisman midfielder David Zurutuza for the trip south on Saturday. Zurutuza has been vital to his side this season and it is no coincidence their last defeat came when he was missing against Deportivo la Coruna.

Granada need to turn draws into wins, but anything against Real Sociedad will give them hope that in the new year they can climb out of the bottom three.

3: Sevilla look to earn some headlines

Vicente Iborra was the unlikely hero for Sevilla when his second half hat-trick against Celta Vigo gave Jorge Sampaoli' s men a 3-0 away win last Sunday. The win keeps Sevilla just a point behind Barcelona and if they can beat Malaga on Saturday they will close to just 4 points behind Real Madrid.

Sevilla probably miss an out and out striker, but with Samir Nasri pulling the strings in midfield and goals coming from all quarters, it' s about time fans started to view Sevilla as this season' s dark horse for the title.

4: Moya' s moment arrives but goalkeeper not Atletico' s biggest issue

Atletico Madrid' s 3-0 defeat in Villarreal on Monday came at a high price, not only to their pride, but also through the loss of goalkeeper, Jan Oblak with a dislocated shoulder and Tiago with a knee problem. Jose Gimenez will also miss Saturday' s match at home to Las Palmas in which Miguel Angel Moya will replace Oblak in goal.

Moya has only just returned to action following a knee operation, but should offer almost the game guarantees as Oblak as Atletico' s problem is not in goal, but in front of goal. It is virtually unthinkable that Atletico should concede three goals in a game, but the fact is this season, the defense and the midfield that protects it are not at their best. Atletico are less solid defending set pieces and less effective attacking them. That has to improve at home to Las Palmas otherwise they could well slip out of the top-6.

5. Home comforts for Athletic Club?

Fans will have to wait until Monday night to watch Athletic Club Bilbao entertain Celta in a game between two sides that have reached the last 32 of the Europa League. Athletic have been tough to beat in front of their fans, but time and again points won in San Mames have been dropped in poor performances on the road. The last game before Xmas offers the Basques the chance to close the gap on a top-four spot, but their away form means they can' t afford to slip up against a rival that plays slick attacking football.

Key players such as Mikel San Jose and Aymeric Laporte have gone missing too often this season for Athletic, Laporte is suspended on Monday, but San Jose needs to get back to his best if Athletic are to end 2016 on a high note.
